Mathieu Matégot ‘Soumba'
A set of three ‘Soumba’ nesting tables, designed by Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) in France in 1953.
Constructed from lacquered perforated sheet metal, with rectangular tray tops supported on slender tubular metal legs terminating in contrasting brass feet.
The use of perforated metal, rigitulle, is characteristic of Matégot's work of the early 1950s, allowing him to give metal an extraordinary visual lightness, almost treating it as a textile. The three graduated tables nest neatly together, combining the graphic quality of the metal with the delicacy of their fine legs and brass sabots.
France, 1953.
