Oak Credence Table
The semi-circular boarded top opening on iron hinges, above a frieze carved with fluting and lozenge ornament, raised on turned columnar legs united by a triangular stretcher, the blocks carved with stars. English, circa 1640.
The table is largely original and is a beautiful colour, it has had the inevitable repairs and alterations expected with something over 350 years old.
Dimensions: Width: 113cm / Depth: 55cm (when folded)
A distinctive form of the Elizabethan and early Stuart period, credence tables served both domestic and ecclesiastical purposes. The present example, with its geometric carving and robust base, exemplifies early English oak. Comparable examples are illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture: The British Tradition (1979), pp. 380–383.
