Trestle table, Walnut
Further images
A Spanish walnut refectory table with a single plank top of elegant and generous proportion, raised on shaped end supports joined by a wrought iron stretcher. The base is constructed with carved and chamfered trestle uprights terminating in stylised bracket feet, reflecting the robust architectural character associated with Spanish Baroque domestic furniture. The top retains a well-used surface with patina consistent with early use, complementing the strong structural form of the base.
Spain, circa 1700.
Notes Tables of this type were commonly produced in Castile and northern Spanish regions during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The use of iron stretchers provided structural stability while allowing for wide, uninterrupted tops suited to communal dining and working. Surviving examples are valued for their direct construction and strong surface character.
