Painted Cast Iron Standard Lamp
A cast iron floor lamp cast in the Herculaneum revival style, popular from the mid-1800s onward as excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum fed a taste for Neoclassical bronzes and lighting. The reeded column rises from a tripod base of scrolling acanthus feet, terminating in a lotus-form drip pan and a further foliate collar beneath the socket - decorative devices lifted straight from Roman oil-lamp stands.
With the original dark paint over cast iron.
Originally a torchere now converted for electricity.
