Gino Sarfatti, Model 559 Table Lamp

The rotating screen allows directional control of light, reflecting Sarfatti’s functional and technical approach to illumination design in the early 1950s. The acetate diffuser provides a softer, warmer diffusion than glass and survives in good period condition Unmarked, as is typical of early Arteluce production. Construction, proportions, and adjustment mechanism are consistent with documented examples of Model 559..

Notes
Model 559 was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1954 and is one of Sarfatti’s most important early table lamp designs. Early examples are known with variations in materials and detailing, including glass diffusers; within approximately one year of production this was replaced by acetate, reflecting Arteluce’s evolving production methods.
