Ebonised Oak Stool
A generous rectangular stool or side table, the gently dished seat raised on five shaped legs united by a plinth base that sits on a thin bronze plate. The ebonised oak surface with rich patina. French, circa 1930s.
Dimensions: Height: 46cm / Width: 60cm / Depth: 50cm
This stool reflects the style africaniste popular in French decorative arts of the interwar period when designers such as Pierre Legrain and his contemporaries drew inspiration from African forms and materials. The geometric construction and dark ebonised finish lend the piece both sculptural presence and a restrained modernity. Related examples, often conceived as low stools or tabourets, were produced for avant-garde interiors in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s.
